Aston Villa have announced striker Ollie Watkins has signed a new long-term contract with the club.
Watkins has been in superb form for Unai Emery’s side scoring seven goals this season adding to his 15 strikes last term.
The former Brentford striker has netted two hat-tricks already this season making him the first Villa player to do so in the same season since Andy Gray in the 1970s.
The 27-year-old celebrated a call-up to the England squad on Thursday for the upcoming games against Australia and Italy.
A statement from Aston Villa read: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce Ollie Watkins has signed a new, long-term contract with the club.
“The striker, who yesterday received a recall to the England squad, has now scored 50 goals for Villa since joining from Brentford in 2020.
“His 15 goals last term helped fire Villa into Europe while he has reached double figures in each of his three seasons at the club – with seven to his name in all competitions so far this season, including two hat-tricks, the first Villa player to achieve the feat in the same campaign since Andy Gray in the 1970s.
“A graduate of the Exeter City Academy, he spent time in non-league football with Weston Super-Mare before impressing for the Grecians and then Brentford.”
Before the official announcement, Villa posted a tease video of Watkins reading a host of fan comments urging him to sign a contract extension.
The striker giggled his way through the comments which including ‘sign the contract big boy’, ‘give him a fat contract right now’ and ‘we are also delighted with you, sign the contract you beautiful man.’
Watkins has the opportunity to continue his fairytale week and further endear himself to the club’s fans when Aston Villa head to Midlands rivals Wolves on Sunday.
