Mac Allister made 112 appearances on the south coast, netting 20 goals, whilst becoming a fan favourite following his arrival from Argentinos Juniors in 2019.

The World Cup winner left Brighton for Liverpool in an initial £35million last summer and was applauded by the home supporters before kick-off.

After the match, his ex-boss De Zerbi went straight towards the 24-year-old, putting his arms around him, before pointing to the home fans, signalling for them to applaud him once again.

Mac Allister clapped and waved back to supporters, as he made his way around the pitch.

The clip was posted on social media and fans loved the classy gesture.

One said: “This is so sweet… Huge respect Brighton.”

Another added: “Respect.”

A third wrote: “He deserves it.”

It certainly indicated the midfielder’s relationship with his former side is still strong.

However, things did not go brilliantly for him on the pitch. Mac Allister’s error gifted Brighton the opener with Simon Adingra slotting past Alisson to give the hosts the lead.

“The most difficult thing to do is to make a mistake against your old team and then come back in the game like he did. Mistakes happen.” Klopp said post-match.

Mohamed Salah later netted twice to put Liverpool ahead, before Lewis Dunk poked home on 78 minutes to salvage a point for the hosts.
