Ronald Koeman fires dig at Kylian Mbappe for Champions League display against Newcastle

Ronald Koeman doesn’t seem too fazed about facing Kylian Mbappe after digging out his poor performance against Newcastle.

The Frenchman was part of a Paris Saint-Germain side that lost 4-1 against the Magpies in the Champions League earlier in the month.

Mbappe’s quality is undisputed but he was an anonymous figure at St. James’ Park as Newcastle cruised to victory.

He is now on international duty with France having failed to score in his last four games for PSG despite netting eight in total this season.

The World Cup winner is due to face the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 qualifying clash in Amsterdam.

However, opposition boss Koeman is confident in his side’s chances against 24-year-old after what he saw in Newcastle.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the visit of France, he said: “The highest achievement tomorrow would be beating France. Why not?”

“Because they are much further than your team is,” a reporter said, and Koeman replied: “I saw Newcastle play against PSG, and Mbappe played in that game.”

Following the defeat to Newcastle, Mbappe was handed a 2/10 rating from France’s leading sports newspaper L’Equipe.

Even bakery giants Greggs poked fun at him for what was probably one of the worst displays of his career.

Recent form suggests he’s struggling at the moment but Koeman’s words could inspire him to dazzle for France on Friday night.

Mbappe sits on four goals for Les Bleus in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign thus far.

France sit top of Group B with five wins from five and six points ahead of the Netherlands, although the latter have a game in hand.

Should he play, Mbappe will make his 72nd appearance for France and could add to his current tally of 40 goals for his country.
