J.J. Watt has cheeky response to Patrick Mahomes’ claim that he’s the Chiefs’ emergency punter

J.J. Watt wants Patrick Mahomes to prove it.

After the Kansas City quarterback took to social media to proclaim that he’s officially the Chiefs’ backup punter, Watt – who was one of the best defenders in the league for a decade – demanded Mahomes do more than just tweet when attaching himself to such an important NFL position.

Patrick Mahomes can do it all as a QB but is he really the Chiefs' backup punter?

Posting a light hearted response on X, he wrote: “We got 6,000 videos of you throwing no-look darts and 70-yarders in pregame, yet not one single punt on film?”

Mahomes remained calm and cool in his tongue-in-cheek response. “Waiting for the right moment! Patience is key,” followed by laughing emojis.

The depth chart on the Chiefs’ official website shows Tommy Townsend as Kansas City’s No. 1 punter.

No backup is listed, which only adds to the Mahomes mystery.

The pressing question of whether Mahomes is really the Chiefs’ No. 2 punter came to light when Kansas City special teams coordinator Dave Toub told reporters that the big job belonged to Mahomes.

“I been trying to tell yall!!!” Mahomes proclaimed.

Watt, like many NFL fans, replied with a not so fast quip, wondering how Mahomes could be the league’s reigning MVP, a two-time Super Bowl champion, a Formula One investor and a backup punter at the same time.

Mahomes also hopes to eventually own an NFL team, which makes it even harder to imagine that he also has time to practice punting.

And fans joined in the fun online.

“$100 says he pulls a hammy the first time he tries to punt 🤣😂,” one tweeted.

“JJ asking the tough questions,” joked another.

“That’s what I’m saying! Pictures or it didn’t happen!” tweeted a Watt supporter.

Either way, Mahomes is still on top of the NFL world.

Kansas City has won five consecutive games after a season-opening loss to Detroit.

The Chiefs rival San Francisco, Philadelphia and Miami as early favorites this year.

And if Kansas City ever needs serious help at a position that can swing games with a single kick, the best QB in the league is ready to do whatever it takes for his Chiefs.

Whether you believe Mahomes or not.
