Emmanuel Adebayor in stitches at infamous Arsenal goal clip and insists ‘I have no regrets’

Emmnuel Adebayor was left in stitches after listening to audio of his infamous goal and celebration against Arsenal in 2009.

The former Togo international spent three years at the Emirates Stadium before securing a £25million move to Manchester City.

The switch made Adebayor public enemy No 1 among Gunners fans who claimed the transfer was motivated by money.

Adebayor quickly made himself a fan-favourite at the Etihad Stadium, scoring in his first three games for the club before netting again – this time against his former employers.

Angered at the accusations and abuse surrounding his Arsenal exit, Adebayor celebrated his goal by sprinting the full length of the pitch and producing a knee-slide celebration directly in front of the travelling Arsenal fans.

The celebration has become one of the all-time iconic Premier League moments but not for some Gunners fans who still hold resentment against the African.

Adebayor, who announced his retirement from football in March, was keen to set the record straight on Thursday when he joined talkSPORT Breakfast hosts Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor.

And the pair quickly got an idea of Adebayor’s feeling around the celebration 14-years on, when they played the audio of his goal, leaving the former striker in hysterics.

However, after the jokes simmered Adebayor gave his own version of the events that led to the infamous knee slide.

“Arsenal was my favourite team when I was young, my idol was Nwankwo Kanu,” Adebayor told talkSPORT. “So when I got to Arsenal, everything was great, I was having a great season. Then, I got injured and the manager told me I had to leave.

“And when I left they released the story in front of the world saying I left for money. But that’s not the truth because then I could have gone to Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan.

“I refused all the offers to stay at Arsenal.”

Adebayor continued: “Then a year later, I got injured in the game against Spurs, I pulled my hamstring and I had a difficult season where I scored only 18 goals.

“When I came back from holiday, I was in Arsene Wenger’s office and he told me I had to leave the club and even if I say and I cannot even fight for my place because I will never play again.

“They actually blocked me walking into the training ground.

“I didn’t want to go but when I saw the interview that some of the Arsenal players were giving and people were abusing me as a bad footballer. Abusing my parents and calling my mum a w**** and my father washes elephant. At that moment, I had to give something back.

“When I scored that goal, that was the only thing on my mind, payback time.

“I don’t regret it but if you say would I do it again? I would say no.”
