David de Gea 'may RETIRE if he does not receive an offer to become the No 1 goalkeeper at a top club', with the former Manchester United stopper still without a new side after leaving Old Trafford

David de Gea is contemplating retirement as he struggles to find a new club, according to reports, though the goalkeeper is determined to remain a No 1.

Former Manchester United and Spain stopper De Gea has rejected several approaches this summer after his 12-year stay at Old Trafford came to an end.

He has kept himself sharp in individual training sessions, however, and is actively on the hunt for a new side, albeit one that would install him as their first choice.

The Guardian claim that several bids from Saudi Arabia have been snubbed with money not the primary motivation behind the 32-year-old’s potential next move.

Despite being released by United at the end of the last campaign, De Gea would prefer to turn out for a team capable of pushing for major trophies this season.

He has recently been linked with a move to either Real Betis or Valencia in LaLiga, though neither switch has materialised. Potential interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also fell by the wayside, leaving the keeper a free agent.

De Gea picked up the Premier League’s Golden Glove award in 2022-23 after a superb campaign between the sticks, having kept 17 top-flight clean sheets.

This was not enough to earn him a contract renewal, though, with the club, seemingly under instruction from Erik ten Hag, declining to extend his deal.

His departure paved the way for Andre Onana to arrive from Inter Milan and he remains the Red Devils’ new No 1 despite his shaky start to life in England.

De Gea is thought to be disappointed over the manner of his abrupt United exit after more than a decade of service, having been offered reduced terms by the club.

Discussions between both parties had progressed across the back end of last season but broke down in July, preventing De Gea from bidding farewell to supporters.

According to The Sun, United’s squad were also frustrated by De Gea’s treatment.

It is understood there was disquiet among players over the manner of his release, especially in light of the fact that De Gea was popular in the dressing room.

De Gea seemingly expressed his ire at the situation when he posted a circus emoji on Twitter, now X, after United’s sudden U-turn on his contract conundrum.

He later insisted that he was ‘seeking a new challenge’ despite the withdrawn offer.

During his time at United, De Gea won the Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League and cemented himself as a firm favourite among the fanbase.
