James Maddison experienced some technical difficulties during his post-match interview but made a quick-witted joke that Jamie Carragher loved.
The England star played a key role in Spurs’ 2-0 win at home to Fulham on Monday night, scoring the second of the night – a result which sees Ange Postecoglou’s side return to the top of the Premier League.
It was a very smooth evening for Spurs, but the same can’t be said for Maddison’s post-match chat with Sky.
Maddison informed presenter Dave Jones, as well as pundits Carragher and Wolves manager Gary O’Neil that he could hear audio of Marco Silva being interviewed in the background of his earphone.
An apologetic Jones said the issue would be rectified while Carragher was keen to know what Silva was saying.
And quick as a flash, Maddison replied: “He’s saying Maddison’s goal was excellent, I think.”
He’s scored more spectacular goals but Maddison showed great composure to double Spurs’ advantage on 54 minutes as they took advantage of some poor play at the back from Fulham. Heung-min Son gave the home side the lead in the first half.
Victory means Spurs are now two points clear at the top of the table having amassed 23 points from nine matches.
The result also means Postecoglou has made the best start to a season of any manager from their opening nine matches in Premier League history.
There’s still plenty of football to be played this season but Postecoglou isn’t ruling out a title push, telling talkSPORT about a title bid post-match: “Unless there’s something in the rules to say we can’t, we can.”
